Winter Camping Tips and Hints!
Camping in the winter? Not for the faint hearted!! Whatever your age or experience, camping during the winter months can be dangerous and should be carefully planned and the following essential supplies taken into consideration.
Clothing: Warm! Simple as it sounds, layering your clothing is necessary! One winter fleece is simply not adequate and it is far better to take too many pieces of clothing than too few. Wearing at least three layers is advisable, but more is recommended and it is important to make sure your outer layer is totally waterproof. Ask in your local specialist retailer for the best selling winter brands, as although they can sometimes be costly, opting for cheaper brands may compromise your warmth and safety. Wear hats, scarves and gloves to keep your extremities safe from the elements.
First Aid: First Aid kits are necessary all year round and vary in price.

Footwear: Brands such as Saloman and Keen are most popular and you should make sure that your choice is supportive, sturdy and warm, as well as waterproof. Wear at least one thick pair of socks for added insulation, as toes loose heat easily.
Sleeping bag: Again, opting for a cheap version can compromise your health and safety. Brand such as Eddie Bauer, Coleman or Slumberjack are rated for their warmth and quality.
Food: In the winter months it is important to take a stove and cook warm meals. Brands such as Sunngas and Kampa are quality for money, but make sure you take into consideration the gas supply. Pack plenty of carbohydrates and eat frequently, as the body`s metabolism speeds up in the cold to keep your internal temperature around 37oC.
Safety tips: A drop as little as 1oC in core body temperature can lead to hypothermia. For this reason, it is very important to bear the above points in mind. During the winter months daylight hours are greatly reduced, so do not leave your campsite or tent late in the afternoon without a torch and appropriate clothing. Always inform people of where you plan to visit and how long you will be camping for. It is important that there is someone, other than yourself and your party, who knows where you should be and can raise the alarm if you don`t return. Eat well and keep warm. Hypothermia occurs gradually and the early symptoms are similar to those that would happen in a normal cold situation, so be careful. Symptoms range from: shivering, lack of energy and pale skin; to: problems paying attention, confusion, stumbling, memory loss, slurred speech and shallow breathing.
Tent: Always make sure your tent is the right size for the number of people, for example camping with 4 requires 4 person tents. Brands such as Vango, Coleman and Quechua are rated, however asking in your local retailer is again recommended, as they can advise with regards to your specific needs.
